August 22, 1968 Cynthia Lennon sues John for divorce, accusing him of adultery. Cynthia had (rightfully) suspected for years that John had been cheating on her, most recently with Yoko Ono. As retaliation, John later tried to sue Cynthia, claiming she was the one who had commited adultery. Regardless, the marriage ended in a very prolonged and ugly way. Ironically, the two were married on August 23 just 6 years earlier.
Here’s a clip of John’s “You Can’t Do That” from a deleted scene in A Hard Day’s Night. The song seemed to be symbolic of Lennon’s treatment of women early in his life.
